Over 30 years Japan’s Studio Ghibli has created a body of work that is rivalled only by the USA’s Pixar for emotion, clarity of storytelling, visual beauty and profound sympathy for their young characters. Spirited Away was awarded the 2003 Oscar for Best Animated Film and a further four Ghibli films have been nominated for that category. The Red Turtle is Studio Ghibli’s first collaboration with a non-Japanese director.
