Eritrean-born Gianfranco Rosi emigrated to Italy during the Eritrean War of Independence. He is the only documentary filmmaker to have won the top prize at more than one major film festival (Fire at Sea at Berlin International Film Festival, and Sacro GRA at Venice film festival). Rosi is known for living alongside his subjects for many months at a time. Fire at Sea was Italy’s submission to the Best Foreign Film category at the 2017 Academy Awards.
