Last night, we launched the 14th Great Southern Festival at the Albany Entertainment Centre. The three-week Festival will see a range of international and local artists flocking to the Great Southern region to enjoy a program full of visual arts, theatre, jazz, classical music, film and literary events.
Opening the 2016 Great Southern Festival is The Snake Run Project, celebrating Albany’s iconic, downhill skate park – a pilgrimage site for skateboarders from around the world. American skateboarding champion, Russ Howell, was the guest of honour at the opening of the Snake Run in 1976; he returns in 2016 to take part in a special 40th-anniversary event, designed by award-winning producer Annette Carmichael. This spectacular free event commences with a very special Welcome to Country.
Once again, the ever-popular Playmakers series returns to the Great Southern Festival to showcase the local luthiers (string instrument makers) who are influencing craftsmanship across the globe. Over the weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in instrument demonstrations, discussions and concerts – all while sampling locally sourced food and wine – with a cast of Playmakers from the region.
