Filmed in Meekatharra, Perth and Paris, Rolf de Heer’s third feature hinges on a life-changing outback encounter with jazz. We begin in the fictional Poona Flat, a remote country town hundreds of kilometres from ‘international’ music. One blisteringly hot day, a Boeing 707 lands unexpectedly on an airstrip on the edge of the town. Out steps jazz trumpet star Billy Cross (Miles Davis), who plays an impromptu concert to the town’s stunned residents. Among them is young John Anderson, immediately smitten with Cross’ soaring, impossibly exotic music, and who is determined from that point to pursue this master influence. Dingo features the only film acting performance by the inimitable Miles Davis, and an original score by Miles and Michel Legrand (1999 PIAF). These superb transnational qualities rub up against a vision of tough, Spartan Australia, and suggest that art and excellence can and will transform us.
The screening will be introduced by Rolf de Heer
